Effective Tuesday (July 30, 2019) President Trump signed a bill that
declares the United States has been in a state of war since December
7, 1941. With this legislation signed, the American Legion’s eligibility
criteria changes from seven war eras to two. April 6, 1917 to November
11, 1918 and December 7, 1941 to a time later determined by the
federal government. No other restrictions to American Legion
membership are changed. Effective immediately, approximately 6
million veterans nationwide are now eligible to join the American Legion
programs and benefits for which they had previously not been eligible.
